For a taste of peace and quiet, there's no better place than the commune of St-Marcellin-lès-Vaison.
Situated just 2 kilometers from Vaison-la-Romaine, it's mostly made up of scattered settlements.

As soon as you arrive, you'll notice the little Sainte-Marie-Madeleine chapel next to the large cypress tree on your left, the only religious building in the commune without a parish church.

Continuing along the road, you come to the village square, the main meeting place where you'll find the school and town hall.

The place has been inhabited for a very long time, however, as the area has yielded several Roman artefacts: a statue of Jupiter and another of Bacchus.

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Marcellin passed from the hands of the Princes of Orange to those of the Taulignan family, whose private castle stands in the middle of a large park that also contains an ancient Romanesque chapel. With no historic monuments of note, the village has been gradually urbanized, offering the opportunity to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

A little way from the village, on a hillock, you can still make out the remains of the old castle, of which only a few walls remain.

Head off into the woods to discover the surrounding area, thanks to the small footpaths that start from the heart of Saint-Marcellin-lès-Vaison.

DID YOU KNOW?
When the départements were created, the village was incorporated into the district of Nyons in the Drôme. At the time, it was a Dauphiné enclave in the Comtat. Saint-Marcellin was not attached to the département until the end of August 1793, 15 days after the official creation of Vaucluse!
