Passing through the region, you'll notice Puyméras, perched on a hill with its castle facing it. You'll recognize the village by its church with its curious "gendarme hat" steeple.
Park in the parking lot opposite the Place de la Grande Fontaine, beneath the château. This is where you'll enjoy the best view of the church and its tiered roofs, the covered wash-house and its pretty fountain.

On the other hilltop stand the remains of the château that was destroyed by the local inhabitants during the French Revolution. Now privately owned, it is not open to the public. Climb up to Place de l'Eglise, with its magnificent view over the plain and village. Vaison castle stands out against the mountains. The Romanesque church of Saint-Michel has been remodeled many times, and its façade features a highly original bell tower-wall with three bells.

Walk past the town hall to the Grand Rue, past the belfry. A gateway remains from the old fortifications, known as the Portail de Sabrun, where tradition has it that a massacre took place during the Wars of Religion. A defensive tower can still be seen beneath the Barrys (Provençal for "rampart").

The commune also boasts three Romanesque chapels. Now restored, they are traditionally visited by pilgrims every year.

HIGHLIGHT
Almost unique in France: July 14 is a very republican day. The bust of Marianne is taken out of the Mairie and carried on a stretcher decked out in the colors of France through the streets of the village. Children dressed as revolutionaries follow the parade.

DID YOU KNOW?
Like the famous Bravade in Saint-Tropez, Puyméras also has its own bravade. The Bravadaïres, accompanied by music and people in Comtadin costume, fire blank shots from their rifles to signal the start of the festivities.
