The high village of Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde, on the border with the Drôme, just a few kilometers from Vaison-la-Romaine, welcomes you to its narrow, steep streets.
This former sentinel of the Knights Templar, then the Hospitallers, is located on the left bank of the Aygues river.

You can park on the Place de Verdun. Enjoy the shade of the four magnificent plane trees and the coolness of the fountain, before continuing your visit by admiring the remarkable oak tree, several hundred years old.

The village's narrow streets, which become narrower as you climb, allow you to discover in turn the fountain with its four masks, the 18th-century wash-house, the 17th-century parish church with its single-needle clock and the Maltese cross adorning its façade. Finally, at the highest point in the village, you'll find the old 12th-century château, of which only three towers of fine ashlar with arches remain, set into more recent buildings.

Take the botanical trail along the Serre de la Garde and, from the belvedere, you'll discover the Aygues Valley, the Pre-Alps, the Monts de l'Ardèche, the Cévennes...

The central tower of the ancient château is partly troglodytic. But the toponym "Malegarde" is intriguing: did the first castrum have a bad reputation because it was difficult to defend?

A VILLAGE SECRET
As is the case throughout Provence, there's a legend about the golden goat, which will remain buried forever in the underground passage linking the château to the highest point in the commune.
