In the Middle Ages, Villedieu was a Commanderie of the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem and a Templar stronghold attached to the Commanderie de Roaix. It lies on the edge of the Drôme department, in an undulating landscape of vineyards, olive groves and pine forests.
As soon as you arrive, you'll see the 10-metre-high ramparts protecting the ancient heart of the village.

As you walk along these walls, you'll come to the Place de la Libération and its fountain, which make the very center of Villedieu a place where you can meet, share and enjoy each other's company.

Along the way, you'll be able to admire the 12th-century belfry and one of the three gates cut into the ramparts, which proudly displays one of the last remaining authentic papal crests in the département, as well as a 16th-century clock.

These gates will lead you to the old village, where you can stroll through the narrow streets and discover the 12th-century Romanesque church of Saint-Michel. Its 18-meter-high bell tower rises above what was once the keep of the medieval castle.

As you continue your stroll, you'll discover Renaissance townhouses with mullioned windows. Look out for the "Virgin of the Smile" on a house, a Renaissance-style statue of the Virgin, adorned with a scallop shell sculpted by Alice Colonieu, a renowned ceramic artist.

VILLAGE SECRET
A whole network of underground passages is said to wind under the village and beyond. A tiny part of it has been unearthed. Secret network and means of escape and rescue? Work of the Knights Templar? Only a gigantic investigation could unravel the mystery.
